Morley’s WA Pacific School Games Media team setting the standard

17 students from Morley SHS went to Adelaide in late November providing wide photographic, video and social media coverage of the Western Australian Pacific School Games contingent at this significant international student sporting event.

The Media team members were on a steep learning curve, capturing photos and footage, editing them quickly and hoping to get them online as soon as they could. Were they bored? Not a chance! They were going flat out, working almost to exhaustion at times in very busy days.  Did they enjoy it?   A unanimous YES!

WA had a huge group of over 350 students competing in baseball, basketball, diving, football (soccer), goalball, softball, swimming, table tennis and touch rugby.  Our media team made them the envy of every other state and country as WA is the only one that sends media students in this role. There were heaps of amazed parents and spectators when they found out what our students were doing, wishing their teams had the same.  When you saw how easily the Media team stood out wherever they went in the bright yellow media vests, you could appreciate the attention and positive feedback they received for the terrific work they did.

Morley Media teacher, Mr Brady said, “The students were amazing.  They started with good skills and knowledge but have now learned quickly how to apply these in a wide range of changing situations.  We pushed them hard to meet media obligations, trying to cover as many events as possible, and they responded well. There were some tired bodies hitting the pillows each night but they happily fronted up early each morning to do it all again.”

The team comprised of Team Captains, William Mackinnon and Eve McKay from Year 10, Year 11’s Nicola Kenyon, Michael Maas, Stefan Pokrajac and Lucas Glass, Year 10’s Callum Colgan, Ben Fenu, Frank Li, Louisa Lor, Kate Murphy, Maddi Pearson, Meegan Phung and Sophie Stevens and Year 9’s Alex Bryans, Owen Lawson and Chloe Tatlow.  With Mr Brady, Ms Moro, Mr Heyman and Ms Sofoulis guiding our students along, it was a lively and enjoyable experience.

With over 3500 students and officials from all Australian states and up to 12 pacific region countries, including China, Macau, India and Pakistan, Adelaide was truly a hive of activity.  Throw in the AFL draft and the cricket test being held in Adelaide, there seemed to be sporting logos everywhere.  And amongst it all our Media team wore their state uniform and media vest with pride.  They were a credit to Morley SHS and reflected the high calibre of students and teachers.
